chappelle signs for $50 mil

http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/TV/08/03/television.chappelle.reut/index.html

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) -- Dave Chappelle has signed a massive deal with Comedy Central that will return the comedian's hit series to the network for two more seasons.

Sources familiar with the deal indicate it could be worth about $50 million, vaulting Chappelle, 30, into the rarefied realm of television's top earners. The new contract is believed to mark not only a steep increase for Chappelle as star, writer, co-executive producer and co-creator of "Chappelle's Show," but more significantly, reward him with a hefty chunk of the series' robust DVD sales.

Increasing the pressure on Comedy to close a megadeal with Chappelle was interest from other programmers eager to tap his talents, including NBC Universal Television Group, according to sources, which ultimately deemed Chappelle too expensive. FX is said to have made an eight-figure offer to lure Chappelle to the network, but to no avail.

The deal also has implications beyond Comedy for Chappelle within the network's parent company, Viacom, sources said. Another component sets up Chappelle with a multimillion-dollar deal at Paramount Pictures to star in an adaptation of the autobiography of Rick James, the funk veteran whom Chappelle has lampooned on "Chappelle's Show." He may also be tapped for a different film project.

In addition, the contract is said to establish a development deal for Chappelle's production company, Pilot Boy Prods., with managing principal Mustafa Abuelhija. The pair already has a project under consideration at Comedy featuring "Chappelle's Show" contributor Paul Mooney.

Also reaping the benefits of the deal was Chappelle's longtime partner, Neal Brennan, a director, executive producer, co-creator and writer of the series. While terms of the deal for Brennan were not disclosed, it is one of the richest deals in basic cable for a multihyphenate.

"I knew we could continue at Comedy Central," Brennan said. "We weren't thinking of going anywhere else."

Chappelle, who is vacationing in Paris, was not available for comment.

"Chappelle's Show" has become an important series for Comedy, scoring a trio of Emmy nominations last month and ranking as the highest-rated cable program for the network's demographic sweet spot, men 18-34, who comprised much of the 3.1 million total viewers the series averaged in its second season.

The ratings for "Chappelle's Show" not only held up well in reruns, but boosted other longtime Comedy staples including "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" and "South Park" -- not to mention the network's strong primetime performance in the first and second quarter of the year.

"Life without 'Chappelle's Show' would not have been very bright as far as getting or exceeding those numbers again," said Lauren Corrao, senior VP original programming and head of development. "It means a great deal to growing our schedule. We're thrilled to have him back."

More important, "Chappelle's Show" has become a juggernaut on DVD, selling 1.7 million units to date of a collection of first-season episodes -- the most successful television-related DVD of the year despite minimal marketing.

Chappelle's original deal reaped barely a fraction of DVD revenues -- a source of frustration to the comedian as his second one-year deal with Comedy expired. The new deal cuts Chappelle not only a larger portion of DVD sales -- including retroactively to the first and second seasons -- but revenue from merchandising and events as well.

As DVD becomes an increasingly lucrative revenue stream for networks and studios, the format is taking a place next to syndication as a crucial deal point for profit participants. In HBO's contentious renegotiation with "The Sopranos" star James Gandolfini last year, DVD also emerged as a thorny issue.

Combining Chappelle's DVD take with his per-episode salary (estimated to be in the low-middle six figures) puts him in the league of Gandolfini and fellow Comedy executive producers Matt Stone and Trey Parker of "South Park." He is also slated to partake of a syndication sale of "Chappelle's Show," which may be a remote possibility given the series' raunchy content.

Chappelle has already turned down an offer to host the upcoming sister network MTV's Video Music Awards but is said to be considering a second installment of the stand-up special he filmed for another Viacom property, Showtime, that debuts next month.

The first of 26 new episodes of "Chappelle's Show" is expected to premiere in the first quarter of next year. Each 13-episode season will consist of 10 original episodes, plus two "best-of" episodes and another devoted to music performances.

Howabout that new show:

The Grahm Norton Effect.

Only seen it twice & both times Joan Rivers & Shannon Doherty were on --was it the same show? or are they just on all the time? no matter...though I dislike them both, they were hilarous.
JR (on the dilema of choosing between Bush and Kerry): It's like someone asking you to choose your favorite Menendez brother.

Then Graham brings up on the computer screen all these cities with dual meaning names: Bum and some others that don't come to mind...but then he zeroes in on Vagina Russia, and calls the visitors bureau and hilarity ensues!!

My other favorite is Crank Yankers!
What Shorty!??!

I'm afraid I'm quite ignorant when it comes to Comedy Central Shorties! Only through a little investigation have I come to the conclusion that it is a particular shorty that I seek. Months ago I caught it on tv, these two college guys were taking a trip to some foreign country and were filling out a questionaire while on the plane and it asked some stupid question which convinced the guys that they needed to participate in that particular activity. I THINK that these "shorties" can be purchased but I don't know where to begin. Can anyone help?? Thanks!

Has anyone caught Shorties Watching Shorties yet? I haven't been keepin up on my TV viewing as of late. But last night I caught the last 10 minutes of it.

I'm diggin it. It was weird to watch that as a cartoon, because I've seen so much standup on CC, so I started recognizing most of the bits. But its pretty dern funny in cartoon format.

Anyone else?

I love that Will Farrell is doing political ads for non-profits. If you want to do something political for the upcoming election, check out the VOTEsters website...it's like political Friendster:

I give them a lot of credit going up against SNL, they definitely have better reoccuring characters:

1) Miss Swan
2) Antonia
3) Dixie Wentworth & the Pool Boy
4) Molina and Lida
5) The Vancome Lady
6) Dollar Bill and the Real Motherf***in' News

I'd put them up against Mary Catherine Gallagher, the 'Lovahs', the Roxbury guys and those music teacher people anyday!

Independent Films Wanted

Are you an independent filmmaker looking for an audience?

Well, we have a theater in need of original films!

The Funnybone Comedy Club in Pittsburgh is looking for submissions from all independent filmmakers for our new Independent Film Night starting June 20th. Submissions can be of any length between 3 and 100 minutes. We prefer comedy oriented films, however a quality film or short from any genre will be shown.

If you are local to the Pittsburgh area, and your film is selected, you will be given passes to the show discount passes for your friends, family, cast and crew and you will also be encouraged to sell copies of your film, T-shirts, or whatever in our bar after the show.

If you do not live in the Pittsburgh area, but may be able to make it for the evening your film is being shown, please let us know. We should be able to get you a very nice discount hotel rate.

If you absolutely cannot make it to Pittsburgh, you can always authorize someone in the area to represent you or your film. Just let us know.

All submitted films must be in DVD or VHS format and can only be submitted by the filmmaker or legally authorized agent. Films will not be returned and there is absolutely no guarantee of acceptance.

Please label your film with contact information.

Mail your submissions to:

242 W. Station Square Drive
Bessemer Court, Pittsburgh, PA 15219
(Drops offs are accepted!!!)

Please help get the word out and pass this message along to everyone you think may be interested in either showing off their work or helping the independent filmmaking scene here in Pittsburgh.

Just thought I'd offer a humble apology. I watched some Mad TV on my break today and laughed my ass off.

When it first came on I wasn't able to get into it, so I've always judged it based on that. Now that I was able to watch again with a fresh perspective, its all good.

More useless ramblings . . .
In other news, I watched The Critic and Dilbert when I stumbled in drunk last night.
I'm so glad I don't have a lot of free time these days otherwise I'd never shut the TV off.
And I'm trying very hard to think of even one show I don't watch on CC.

the one where the host goes to Peru (i think) and takes some extremly hallucinagenic musheroom or something along the same lines as peyote, starts vomiting, and gets the shits, then starts rambling about Dr Spok.... funny stuff!

well. i have been after a certain comedy central show for quite sometime. well since i first saw it at least. my friend and I were up late one night and nick swardson was the highlight comedien one night. we laughed our asses off from the things he was saying. so i finally get back into d/l from the net. (gave up on it) only to get the whole segment and then find out that part of the codec is missing so I have no video. but if anyone wants a good laugh. hit that up..

I saw KITH two years ago at the Warfield in San Francisco. Here is a recap from my journal that I wrote the next day.

I just saw Kids in the Hall last night at the Warfield in San Francisco. What a fantastic show!!!! I saw them two years ago (also at the Warfield) but this show was far more fun. They were interacting with the audience all through the show. Mark's ponytail fell off during the skit with Gavin and Darril (guidance counsler skit).. they had there assistant come out (pushed out) and put it back on for him.. he and bruce started improvising at that point and never missed a beat. Scott
had problems with his little loin cloth during the Dr. Suess
bible... but no skin for the audience. David got into an egg fight with the audience during the Chickenlady sketch (after someone yelled, "tastes like chicken")... he picked some off the floor and ate it... Mark remarked "So... you swallow?". It was so incredible... I was one of a couple people singled out in the audience for the "crushing your head" sketch... he told me to get some antibiotics for that thing growning on my chin (my goat).. called me a California dopesmoking treehugging crystal carrying surferboy... he said he wouldn't flatten my head because I'd just use it to roll joints on.

If you ever have the chance to seem them live.. DO IT!
